Commercial TV 'needs public cash'

Part of the TV licence fee should be used to help commercial channels pay for news and public service programmes, a House of Lords committee has said. As broadcasters face severe financial problems, the BBC could become too dominant in news and current affairs, the communications committee says.

The peers suggest a new fund be set up to grant help to commercial channels. It could be created from an expected £130m surplus from a campaign aimed at helping people switch to digital tv. A portion of the licence fee has been set aside to help older people and those with disabilities prepare for the end of the analogue signal in 2012.

Commercial advertising revenues have plummeted and in January media regulator Ofcom recommended Channel 4 merge with either Five or the BBC's commercial arm - BBC Worldwide - to plug a £150m funding gap.

However, the committee said a merger was not the way forward. Instead, committee chairman Lord Fowler called for more partnerships, such as that announced last month involving the BBC sharing regional news resources with itv.

He said the proposed fund would offer "a more flexible solution than creating a new organisation with all the potential problems that involves". The BBC Trust, which regulates the corporation, said it would only support proposals that did not compromise the corporation's ability to deliver public services. There would be "a number of potential calls" on any surplus from the digital switchover fund, including the option of returning it to licence-payers, it said.

Cowboys Cut Terrell Owens

ESPN and Fox Sports are among several outlets reporting that the Cowboys cut Terrell Owens, who averaged 1,196 receiving yards in three seasons with the team. The Cowboys had yet to confirm the move as of 2 a.m. ET Thursday morning.

Owens' divisive effect inside the Cowboys locker room may have prompted Owens' dismissal. In December, the Cowboys had several off-field dramas as a fissure developed between Owens and QB Tony Romo.

Why Cowboys cut Terrell Owens?

Owens at several points during the season publicly asked for a bigger role in the offense.

Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones had been non-committal on Owens' future until this point in the offseason.

Owens' dismissal puts two of the top six all-time leaders in receptions, with Marvin Harrison, on the market this offseason. Owens' 951 receptions rank sixth and Harrison's 1,102 are second.

There are several reasons to take a shot on Owens, starting with his age. T.O. is now 35 years old but still a physical wonder and he can still play the game at a high level. He's also a smart guy and he has to know that at his age, his next team will be his last. He probably has three good years left and that number works out for a reason.

In both Philly and Dallas he was a model citizen for the first two seasons and was monstrously productive. In both situations it was year three that the emotional wheels fell off. Since he probably only has three productive seasons left it wouldn't be hard to rely on him for two or three seasons.

The other situation revolves around the guy they call Baby T.O., Brandon Marshall. He has Owens like skills on the field, but way too many troubles off of it. Because of those troubles he may be facing a lengthy suspension from the NFL and signing Owens provides insurance for games that Marshall may miss.

When the two are on the field together on opposite sides with Eddie Royal or Brandon Stokley in the slot, this offense could be unstoppable. Denver is already looking for another starting receiver and there isn't anyone available with his talent.

There is a major drawback to signing Owens and that also revolves around B-Marsh. Marshall is a young man who is still learning how to control himself off the field. Even though Owens hasn't run into legal trouble his attitude may not be the best impression on the young counterpart.

Apparently they got in an argument. It really sickens me, and I pray she does not go back to him, like so many women tend to do! It is no excuse, but the fact his step father used to beat his mother, he was raised seeing that, and instead of breaking the cycle he is continuing it. My heart goes out to Rihanna, and I was never a huge Chris Brown fan to begin with, but I will not be supporting him by buying his music or anything.

Earthquake Today

An earthquake today has hit the Los Angeles area and has measured in at 5.8 on the Richter scale. LA Fire Department is calling the quake a major seismic event. The strong quake reportedly shook building in downtown Los Angeles and was centered 29 miles east of the large city.

It is not known if there are any injuries and what kind of property damage is involved as residents of the Los Angeles metropolitan area brace for the aftershocks that may come as the day moves forward.

Los Angeles was struck by a 5.4- magnitude earthquake today, shaking buildings as far away as San Diego. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake, originally reported as a 5.8 magnitude, hit today at 11:42 a.m. local time, 29 miles (47 kilometers) east- southeast of the Los Angeles Civic Center, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site. The quake was 7.6 miles deep and was felt more than 100 miles away.

Jeff Ranieri, a meteorologist with NBC Weather Plus, said the quake occurred along the Whittier and Chino fault lines, not the highly unstable San Andreas Fault.

The shallow nature of the quake helped to disperse the impact, spreading it over an area of about 100 miles. He said aftershocks up to magnitude 4.0 could be expected.

No electrical outages were reported in Los Angeles due to the quake, said Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Kim Hughes.

In Orange County, about 2000 detectives were attending a conference on gangs at a Marriott hotel in Anaheim when a violent jolt shook the main conference room.

Mike Willever, who was at the hotel, said, "First we heard the ceiling shaking, then the chandelier started to shake, then there was a sudden movement of the floor."

EarthQuakes Today

Ps3 Update 2.41

Just last week Sony released firmware Ps3 update 2.40, but just a day after Sony had to withdraw the update following some problems. However PS3 Update 2.41 is now availble, which Sony say will overcome all the problems from 2.40.

The short lived 2.40 firmware update was meant to allow in-game use of the XMB, along with support for trophies, which was going to be PlayStation 3’s answer to Xbox 360 achievements.

2.40 had to be withdrawn as there were major configuration problems with the update, Sony are still not clear where the problem came from, however they do say that 2.41 will overcome all those problems.

Many people will now be wondering if they should update to PS3 Update 2.41, many gamers might be playing chicken with others, just to see if they get the same troubles as the previous update gave them.

So the 2.40 update was supposed to be the one that all of the PS3 owners were waiting for. However, those that did manage to get it probably wished they waited a bit longer. It seems that Sony has (hopefully) fixed the issues that were bricking consoles, as they’ve released yet another new update.
